You need to go look up what DEF actually is, calling it a hazardous chemical is overkill..!! I'll clear it up for you tho, DEF/AdBlue is urea mixed with water to turn it into liquid form, 32.5% urea and 67.5% water, nothing more, nothing less. Urea is a main ingredience in most fertilizers too Oooh, ok, I didn't know that. Is Urea irritating to the skin though? I've heard some complain about that?
Never mind, I found it. Not irritating at all. Even used in dermatology some times. Urea is technically the same as Urine. well smell wise anyway. We use it on a constant basis here and it has never caused an issue. And I dont know what you dipshits are doing that you think the urea is ruining your trucks. We use thousands of gallons a week on 4 different engines and have no issues with it at all. Oh wait I forgot most not all but most of our Truckers are super truckers!! P.S. And we run the living shit out of these engines.

Rowboat Yeah it does seem a little stupid to use hazardous chemical to change another hazardous chemical into a different form.. You need to go look up what DEF actually is, calling it a hazardous chemical is overkill..!! See, the only experience I've heard from with Cali and older trucks are when Estes bought 1,500 new Internationals to spread through the fleet, they ended up having to send all their new trucks to California and then they wouldn't even let Estes drive them out, they had to be loaded on drop decks. Not sure if they ran into a pissed off DOT officer or what, but I know that for a fact because they were going to haul loads out with them and why in god's name would you not? You're losing money... Some mechanic may be able to answer this, but if you really wanted to keep your cabover or 379, 359, T6, etc, is there a way you could buy a new engine and have the truck fitted with it? It doesn't say 2010+ truck, only ENGINE. So, would there be a way around that for drivers that really like their trucks? Also, Personally, I don't care for DEF. I see it as a waste of money and power, but it's also in its early stages...With time the engines and power will evolve. Cummins is selling either an LNG or CNG engine, and a lot of Love's have those....Honestly, I wouldn't mind running that either, it's less than half the cost of diesel. But with time, they'll find ways to improve the power that comes with DEF. Personally, I'm a Cat guy, but Cummins is a good motor too and however, Cat will always be my favorite, but we may not be able to run them unless they start production again (which I've heard from my grandfather on my dad's side who works for Cat, they were tooling up to build again before the 2012 election). Sorry for the double post, I couldn't figure out how to copy the quote thingy on this new forum About this story about Estes. I'm not calling you a lier or anything but I don't believe this. They could of ran into a asshole DOT officer, but thats bs they had to ship their old trucks out of the state on trailers. I know guys that run older trucks to Oregon and Nevada few times a week and they have no problems at all. Yeah, I wasn't there, nor was my dad. This is just what we've heard and y'all know how trucker's stories get

I have more examples if you would like to hear them. Maybe it is just British Columbia and Alberta that are getting these numbers I don't know I am not an expert but it seems like it....

Adam, ok, cause some of r.modjeski's recent pictures and videos show older trucks, and I was wondering how they got away with that. good to know. Well a good number of those older trucks are registered in states other than California so the laws here can't touch the out of state registered trucks, smart thinking that's for sure. Just today as I was out spotting here in New Mexico I saw lots of trucks blowing smoke, made my day. I think I'm gonna move out of Cali because the air laws aren't helping our current air quality one bit... air's still smoggy. Whereas here out in NM there's no strict air laws and the air quality is some of the best I've breathed in a very long time.. These and lots of other trucks were rolling coal, made my day. Taken on the I-40 in Albuquerque.

Sweet. The best all purpose truck is being replaced by a plastic piece of crap. I'm partially with rowan. I like the new aerodynamic models. But to replace the t800 with this thing is sacrilege. Even though the t800 was probably the ugliest kenworth other than the t800w and w900s, It was pretty much unmatched to any other truck on the road for versatility.

Yeah, the lost some of that versatility by not offering the T880 with a sleeper cab, that I think is a big shame. I hope they don't screw up the W900 though, Maybe if they'd give it the same headlights as the T880 it would be all right.

The W900's are my favorite truck of the past couple decades. It has massive presence on the road. More than the 379. It'll be interesting to see how they redesign it.

I hope they don't, or if they do, just make minor changes like the 359-379-389 evolution. Just upgrade it like they've done from the A model to the early 90's to today. I still see trucks all the time with DEF tanks on them that are 389's and W9's so there is still a market for them. I drive about 10 miles either direction on I-35 every day and about 3/5 trucks here anyways are extended hoods to an extent, be it Western Star, Classic XL, 9900, W9, 379, etc. Extended hood isn't dying around here.

They'd better not get rid of the W900 for some aero garbage. That would be the beginning of the end of my support of Kenworth. I like their models, but aero styling is not my preference. Yes, I am warming up to the T680, T700 etc., but I like classic styling and cabovers over anything else. And personally, I like the T800W. That wide nose looks really fierce when it's behind some slow-moving or just otherwise poorly-driving four-wheeler. But that's just my opinion. On another note, I'm glad to see this thread has taken off. This has been probably my best attempt at starting a conversation on here.

The extended hood is not the problem, it's the way it's made. If they (for example) went back to the 40's with the way they make grills (instead of a flat grill, a rounded one) they could cut the air resistance by quite a bit and still keep the classic styling. (heck, even more classic than the last couple of decades)
I don't want to sound whiny though, be glad you still have a choice between classic and modern, cause all the choice we have is modern, whether we like it or not.

Its not that big of a deal anyways guys. You shouldn't worry about weather you have a long square hood or a shorter round hood. Yeah that long square hood might be cooler looking but it shouldn't be about looking cool. If you're going to get into the trucking industry it should be because you want to live that kind of lifestyle, not for what you drive.

But if you're going to get into the industry, if you plan to go somewhere and actually own your own truck and possibly start a company, rather it does to you or not, long hoods matter to a shit load of guys. I don't care what any of you guys say, they do. Ask just about any driver if they owned a truck, would it be an extended hood Pete, KW, Freightliner, or whatever or would it be a Volvo, T7, 579, etc....they're going to pick the long nose probably about 8/10 times. The only trucks that I see that arn't long nose trucks are big fleet trucks. 90% of the O/O's (that I see on a daily basis anyways)have a long nose International, KW, Freightliner, or Pete... Just today I saw a W9, and a 389 with DEF tanks (so they're new)and being run down 35. Long hoods arn't dying around here.

People won't be able to afford to become a o/o if things keep going the way they are. Fuel keeps going up and the rates keep going down. Hell I've heard stories of drivers from other countries that come here, buy a crappy old run down truck, cut the rates to nothing, and end up taking a loss. No one said that hoods are extinct. Of course they're still selling but that doesn't mean they're going to be around forever.

I've been seeing diesel fuel go down here. It's gone from over $4.00 to now $3.72 when I passed it today just in the last month or so. Not saying it's going to keep going down, but I have been seeing it continue to drop here and the surrounding states.

Things change, deal with it. I could have bought a 379 when I drove my 386 off the lot brand new in 2007. They're far too common, and they're a money eater.

Our new trucks can sound awesome too, we just install a valve to by-pass most of the system. XD Just wait till euro6 arrives next year, then all the bypass stuff will end. There is so much monitoring on the whole system and if it deteces just a minor issue it will derate by 40% and if you ignore it or it deteces more severe issues it will automatically set a speedlimiter at 20km/h. Main reason for that to be added to the euro6 requirements is all the people who's been bypassing it since euro4 came out. BUMP MAN just developed a split system for their construction trucks, EGR separated from the muffler. You only have to bypass the muffler to get a good sound. It could be an idea for everyone who wants to get a nice sound of the new Euro 6 trucks.
