You can get similar doing about 63-65. Do you think Western Distribution or TMC would still be running extended hood trucks if they were getting 4-5 mpg? Also, having a wing helps, as do the trailer skirts. We've drove all shapes, forms, fashions and kinds of trucks, the difference in fuel milage is actually quite surprising from driver to driver.

At 65-67mph with an average GVW of approx 76,000lbs in my T660 I would average 5.9-6.4 mpg, depending on terrain. If you drive around in a 389 at 60-62mph with the same weight you would average about 5.5-6.2 mpg. Now that doesn't seem like much, but lets say your average speed is 68-74mph in your 389. At that speed your going to average anywhere from 4.5-5.5mpg. And that is what the government is looking at. One thing is that people are not mature enough to be efficient. It is more important to drive around at 72mph then to slow down to 65 to conserve fuel.

Like I was saying above, a wing or whale tail helps tons, you can get trailer skirts for your trailer, that's going to help. Super singles help from what I've heard, you can order a 389 with the aero mirror caps. Honestly, I don't think you're ever going to get O/Os out of these trucks until you start making it illegal to drive them...

I really dont understand why you kids are all upset about new styles. Its not like they are going to round up all the old trucks and chop them up. I really like the look of this and cant wait to see it on the road. I also find it funny that 90% of the bitching about the classics going away is being done by kids that were not even alive when they were originally released. Yet those of us that were are all for the change. . Really, I'm still really disappointed that they replaced the T600, but this same thing was bound to happen to the T800. I just hope they don't fuck up and replace the W900 along with them. Kenworth guy we talked to said if drivers keep buying w900ls, there gunna keep making them. That must of been the problem with the t800. But the t6 was a popular truck. Millis had a fleet of them, we had a fleet of them, New Century had some and alot more guys had them.

It will grow on most of us. We'll see it in the shop a year from now straight from ohio ready to get PDI'd. Things keep getting newer. Change comes thru. Just because its a new model doesn't mean every T800 will cease to exist.Oh and all this clean stuff. Like corey said you haven't seen anything. They'll keep innovating and there will be more problems. I myself know alot about these new engines. Its a huge cluster fuck. But at least cummins is using the less is more path. And will keep doing it.

He was getting over 8 mpg with a Pete 379, and he was not going five miles an hour.

Yeah its nice they can smoke and pull like a freight train. But sooner or later something will go wrong. There is a reason there aftermarket. And when it does go wrong the owner will go back and the certain aftermarket company will not be liable.

You're probably right, but they do build glider kits, so I'm sure they could fix the truck if something broke. But if his warranty is void and his truck is performing beyond its parameters, it wouldn't be worth it.

Its not like they are going to round up all the old trucks and chop them up. Unless you live in Kalifornia

Coming to that, are all of California's new laws for the state for trucks based out of Cali or all trucks running in or out?

I've heard something about out of state trucks that don't meet the requirements can come into California, but they have to be out of the state in 12 hours or something like that. Not sure if that's true or not.

I think you still may be able to run into California because I still see a lot of pre-05 chicken trucks running I-40 and they usually are going to California, I could be wrong though since after all, that's just an assumption.

Well all of the carb shit isn't in full effect yet, they're doing it in increments. We still have a few more years until it's in full effect. The reason so many people are getting new trucks now is because they're offering more cash at the moment for the old trucks. As time goes on and the deadlines get closer, the amount will go way down. Right now most of the quotes guys are getting are around 45k. The fate of these trucks are scrap. As for the 12 hour rule I'm sure that will go away after awhile.

So my question is how is burning more diesel better for the environment? Last year we ran a 1997 378 3406e 550 and got 5.2 mpg this year we are running a 09 388 isx 550 so pretty much the same truck, exactly the same run, same trailers and same driver. In the 09 we get 4.8 if we are lucky! With winter diesel we can drop down to 3.8. Now don't forgot we net out at 86000 lbs so we are use to shitty fuel economy but 3.8 is just to low! I haven't seen the numbers for myself but apparently the brand new trucks do get better fuel mileage but then you have to pay a insane amount for def so you gain nothing in your pocket. I think it's about 10$ for 5 gal I don't buy it so I could be completely off . And again I'm in Canada so we don't have those big fancy truck stops, so we don't have the def pumps just the jug and in every pullout on the side of the highway there is at least 3 of those jugs lying about. Good the environment? I don't think so. The thing everyone seems to forget is that we are not all company drivers and still pay for these things. I would love to have that good old Cat back.

And the rest of the truck? How is that set up? Are the diffs the same ratio? and what gearbox do you have on it now? It's really weird you're getting lower fuel mileage. Is the 388 heavier? I'd like to add a sexy looking truck: Spoiler Tag

The trucks are pretty much twins other the years. 3.90 in the back end, 18 speed transmissions. Honestly I don't know about the weight but the are pulling the same loads and are both legal so it can't be that much different.

Yeah, one of the better looking 579s for sure, but I still take a 359. I know that 579 doesn't sound like this.

Our new trucks can sound awesome too, we just install a valve to by-pass most of the system. XD

We blocked the egr valve on our signature, got an.error on the computer but it didnt derate and the fuel economy improvrd alot and it runs alot cooler. Pretty much made it a new truck. it actually has better economy than the pre egr engine (same hp identical spec truck). All of the new emission stuff is bypassable.

The 388 is at 740 000 km and is loaded at 140 000 lbs everyday so it is broken in. We were going to take off the emissions BS but the government seems to be cracking down on it. Right now if you get caught with it off you get a 10 000$ fine and you have to put it back on but really nobody looks for it. The guys at the shop don't care and neither do the scalers. Now the are talking you will need it to on your truck to get your inspection sticker. So now you cant take it off or dick with it well at least in Canada.

Our new trucks can sound awesome too, we just install a valve to by-pass most of the system. XD Just wait till euro6 arrives next year, then all the bypass stuff will end. There is so much monitoring on the whole system and if it deteces just a minor issue it will derate by 40% and if you ignore it or it deteces more severe issues it will automatically set a speedlimiter at 20km/h. Main reason for that to be added to the euro6 requirements is all the people who's been bypassing it since euro4 came out. So my question is how is burning more diesel better for the environment? Nox and soot levels is measured pr KWH and not pr gallon of fuel consumed by the engine, that¨'s why you still have a better emissionslevel even when burning more fuel. They started setting max level for the nox gasses which you can reduce just by lowering the combustion temperature which was an easy way to meet the requirements when the first emissions engines got out, negative part by doing it that way is an increased fuelconsumption cause with a lower temperature you wont get as much pressure on the pistons from the same among of fuel = reason they burn more fuel. The fuel prices in Europe are pretty high $7.15/gallon so they instantly had to do something about the raising fuelconsumption so they brought out the SCR system which allows you to run at a much higher combustion temperature so we got more "work" out of the fuel we put in the engine, it caused the nox levels to "explode" but that was taken care of in the catalytic converter when you inject DEF/AdBlue into the exhaust fumes when they entered the silencer. Using the SCR system made our fuelconsumption go back to where it was in the early 90's and our engines run alot cooler than using the EGR system with less efficient engine and a much higher soot level which IMO makes it even worse cause you gotta inject fuel into the exhaust to make the DPF work properly.

Well I'm just glad I'm in Australia haha. There is a company in the us that is reprogramming ecms and basically making it so the truck doesn't even use the emission gear.there would be no way that anyone would know the truck has been modified, unless they probe the exhaust or some shit which i don't even know if they can do. There are guys here in aus using this us company ecms, i think it's about $4000.
