not a better section to put this, so here goes. a couple days ago, my boot.ini file went to shit, but windows still booted. However, when I try to open my documents, explorer crashes. I can explore any other folder on the computer, and folders within mydocs no problems. I can even browse mydocs in programs (ie word, excel, ect). Plus if I just drag the error box off to the side of my screen, I can continue using the mydocs window without any noticeable issues besides the error message. This evening I finally got around to fixing boot.ini, but even after the fix (and it boots fine now, whee) mydocs is still fucked. I'm gonna run "chkdsk /f C:" and do a defrag, maybe even a registry clean. For those of you who don't know/care Windows XP Basic AMD 64X2 3.1 ghz (dual core) 4 gigs of ram (but its 32-bit so ) Anything I'm missing here guys?fixed the problem, but what do you think? Xp? or vista? why? which one do you use?

using 512 MB for running windows isn't too bad IMO. Mine uses less than that because the way I set it up. Your graphics card will take more memory just being plugged in than vista will. People are scared of trying it, I dunno why. XP sucks compared to it, in the last 2 1/2 years I've been running vista I've never really had a problem with anything, and the OS itself never failed on me once and I have it on all my computers. Go figure. Lemmings flock together and tend to jump off a cliff because they seen another one do it.

I hated vista when I first got my new computer, because of so many tiny errors that got on my nerves, and things I wasn't used too. Now that Ive optimized it, ive had really no problems, not much of a memory hog compared to XP IMO. I STILL like XP over Vista though, idk why.

Don't start posting links to that shit. And any fool knows not to download windows illegally or your computer is gonna be fucked up. Although, you're probably better off downloading vista than using a full version of XP, considering there's no more updates for XP. I dunno, but it seems most of you are just noobs that hate vista, it's not vista's fault you didn't download something correctly. The whole point of having vista is to protect your computer, which you can no longer do with XP. If you can't figure out vista or you can't handle like 300MB of extra RAM, then you need to stay away from using a PC and move onto a mac. Even mac's are a joke, people say you can't hack em....yeah right, they're more easily compromised than a regular PC with vista installed.

Well, it's not only that.......it's just not the same. When people crack files things get messy. Not something I'd wanna be relying on. Not only for that reason.....hardware doesn't seem to perform as well on XP. I first upgraded to XP back in april 05, so I was pretty late getting it. Before that I used windows ME. I went to XP bnecause that's when I started playing PC games. Now, in the period of time running XP (april 05 to january 07), I've had 3 DVD burner failures, 2 motherboard failures, a burnt out video card, and 1 hard drive failure. Since I've been using vista (working my PC like a dog mind you, way more than when I had XP) I haven't had to unwillingly replace a thing due to failure. Even last month I had a overheat of my pc, so bad it wouldn't turn on till it was cleaned. All components are still running fine and even a visual inspection there was no sign of wear. Not to mention, I've only had like 5 viruses in the past nearly 3 years, all resulting in nothing happening because of vista's security features. It's not a good OS if you don't know what you're doing. My dad hates it he thinks it sucks compared to XP, and I tell him everytime to stop being a baby and keep using vista. As a result, there's been no failures in the OS or compnents yet on his PC either and he had his longer than I had mine.

I have the brochure somewhere (unless dad burned it in effigy, FreeBSD snobs... ;D) but is there a really, honest to god difference? btw idc about memory hogging, I got 4 gigs, and the copy of vista I have in a drawer is 64-bit anyhoo, RE: the problem, did a registry clean and a defrag, even that weird command prompt thing that checks vital windows files. (src/something) no problems in the registry, but the error went away. Still dont know what fixed it... so IDC about the issue now, but still kinda interested in this whole vista vs. xp thing (admins, I'd like to keep this open, but if you want to lock, whatever)

Windows vista basic is basic features. Home premium is premium features. The main differences are appearance, functionality, and security with home basic being the absolute shittiest. lol.

if the only difference is programs, wtf would you not buy basic and just use your own? I got security covered, and appearance dosent matter to me, guess it just gets down to what you mean by "functionality" BTW, I still get updates for xp, like somebody said, once a week.

Vista home premium is what I have nothing wrong with it perfect like the style and has great security annoys me when it asks permission to run some program but I still like it, makes you think about the damage it might cause to your computer I got McAfee antivirus with my computer and im gonna honestly say it sucks so I went out and bought my own antivirus ( and I mean I went out to the store) I went out and purchased Kaspersky Antivirus it came with 1 year so im just gonna reinstall it and get the 1 year thing again...

Antivirus only protects you from viruses, once your pc is compromised then that's it.... and trust me, viruses can get through protection. UAC is just one option in vista that XP doesn't have and it makes a huge difference from having your PC destroyed.
