Bake your AO map in your program of choice, making sure that the diffuse colour of the model is white. Open your original texture, and the AO texture you baked in a competent image editing program (Photoshop, PSP, Paint.net, GIMP, etc). Copy your AO map to a new layer in your original texture. Set the blend mode of the AO layer to 'multiply'. Flatten the image and re-save it as tga.
If you find the AO effect is too strong, you can decrease the opacity of the AO layer to taste.
