You know, I'd always wondered, how does one get into driving a train? do you go to school for it and how long? how does everything work? like do you bring your lunch to work or what? and how long are you gone for from home? I don't care much about about the pay, but if I don't end up driving a truck I'd love to do this.

I don't care much about about the pay, but if I don't end up driving a truck I'd love to do this. Well I can answer the home thing. Usually if your on a freight train, your probably not going to come home untill the next day. Thats why when you see conductors switching(end of the shifts), you see them with suitcases. They usually stay at a hotel(paid by the company) untill they can come back home. Same for long distance passengers too, like Amtrak and Acela. I have a friend thats a Dispatcher down at the Chattanooga rail yard in Tennessee. He makes a shit load. Last time I talked to him he was making 70 thousand. And basically, think of a freight train as a truck. It has to go pick up the train cars, which could be parked at a yard or on a customers track(grain for instance). They go in, scoop up the few rail cars, go out to the main track and attach it on the consist they already had, and keep going down the line. Unless, its Intermodel(containers/trailers), those are like passenger trains, just freight. They don't stop, and shouldn't stop untill they get to the destination. Your shift could last all day. Skip to 3:33. Theres an example www.youtube.com/my_subscriptions?pi=0&ps=20&sf=added&sa=0&sq=&dm=2&s=cuT3nxTbeSk&masthead=1&as=1#Heres another informational vid.

There is Few Answers First , i don't drive the Train , im a conductor , i Only do the Switching duties outside , Talk with the dispatcher look at the Signals , I Do all the Paperwork . And if a Knuckle breaks On My train , I Am the one who gets out and change it ! (Even if this is in the middle of nowhere in 5 feet of snow at -40C ! ) <-( That really happenned....) I Went to Cegep André-Laurendeau 4 Months for the RNA.06 Program ( Same as here -> www.georgebrown.ca/Marketing/FTCal/caet/T151.aspx#maincontent ) Yes i bring my Lunch , hahahaha Actually I Work 4 Days a Week , Wed-Thu-Fri-Sun , Wed-Thu On Passenger Service Between Montreal And Jonquiere QC ( 10 Hours run.... when everything goes right ) and Fri-Sun On CN ...(I Do everthing , Mainline ,yard , local service...it depends) Oh you said that you don't care about the pay ? Dude! Im 19 years old , earn about 85 000$ A year ! ...And when i will be a full employee for VIA Rail i will Earn 120 000$ and more ! Hope that i have Answered your Questions

I gotta admit, as cool as trucking is and as much as I want to do it. Working on a train or around trains would be pretty damn cool too! I've always thought of it as a job I wouldn't mind. And my dad and brother know a few guys that do it, and basically get paid to do nothing at times, or get paid for 10 hours worth of work when they only were needed to come in for 1.
I definitely would like to investigate the career some more.

That's really amazing guys, thanks for the answers. I wish we had via rail going through calgary, all we got is CN, CP, etc, only freight.
We don't get passenger trains coming through here in calgary because the way to vancouver is too rough and dangerous for a passenger train (or so I've heard). I'm gonna look into this more to see how I can get into it actually. Don't get me wrong I love trucks, but the money is way better for this and you can actually get to see the better scenery rather than driving highway. Which is what I'd really want out of the job rather than being concerned about the money.
I wouldn't care about being away from home for even a week at a time doing this, that's definitely worth it all. I have always been curious of how to get into trains for work, now I know. Thanks!

I thought CN was VIA Rail ;D Wow idiot. Lol. Cn = Canadian National UP = Union Pacific Ns = Norfolk Southern, I think if you ask Brandon - P359x he would know alot about this shit more then me. and know as much about it as Quebec. BnSf = Burlington Northern Santafe - Burlington Northern merged with Santa Fe. Then theres CR - Conrail, then Passenger Amtrak
