Here's a question for you CDL holders out there that actually drive, bus, tractor-trailer, straight truck, whatever, or even for those who are currently training to get one. Obviously like everyone I am into big rigs, always have been and always will be. I'm interested in getting a CDL, basically to have if I need, and to drive things that require it if needed, (say if I got hired as a crew member/driver on a monster truck team, or needed some extra cash and drove a bus). Who does one learn to drive a truck or large vehicle when there are none available to practice with? What is involved with getting a CDL? I know there are different classes of CDL, so just explain for the type you have

If there aren't any available to you then your best bet would be a school I'd think. Or asking someone with a truck if they would take you out on some farm roads and teach you. As for what's involved, you can go take a written test and pass to get you practice CDL, which gives you the right to drive anything CDL related that's not tank, Hazmat, or doubles/triples. Then you practice for a while, either with or without a school or company, I'd suggest with one though, or no one will hire you unless you graduated from a school. (for trucking companies anyways)... On test day you show up with a truck and trailer (depending on what class you want) and take the driving portion. You'll need to do a pre-trip and explain to the officer what you're checking and why. I believe you also need to know how to double-clutch too. My foot in will be with Estes Express, Start work there this month as a dock worker/hostler. They'll send me to the Memphis terminal after I turn 21 for their driving class, then I come home and drive with a permit with some city drivers then go take the test with an Estes truck. That's how Estes works anyways...
This is everything how I understand it, I may have left out a few parts, but that's the majority of it.

The most important thing, my dad says, is to know the DOT rules and regulations like the back of your hand. I swear he knows every damn rule in there.. Anyway, read it. Learn it, love it, live it as they say. Then you need to go take the written portion of your test at your department of motor vehicles office(DMV) or the one nearest. You should probably call ahead and ask if you can take it there and if you should schedule an appointment or not. Then, you need to get someone you know that drives and will teach you how to drive. The Pre-trip inspection is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. If you miss something on the pre-trip, most good proctors will either fail you or make the margin for error extremely low. You WILL have to double clutch in order to pass(clutch in-shift out-clutch out-clutch in-shift in-clutch out). But the important thing is to get experience with a real driver. I suggest you try to find one that doesn't jerk the truck around on takeoff, doesn't grind the gears, and has experience. By experience I do not mean a 25 year old driver. I don't care how long he says he's been around it, you're better off with a more experienced driver. My dad has been driving trucks since he was 16 and he's 57! Also, I thought your dad drove, Tyler!?

Well my dad has been driving sense he was 9, sounds crazy but a white man in arkansas at the time needed a driver and my pawpaw had already worked for him and my dad knew how to drive so he hired him when my dad turned 17 he got a CDL and has had it ever sense but he never took any test, its kinda crazy that it was that easy my dad has continued to drive sense then know owning a small construction business down here in Texas. My Dads 54 now. He taught me everything he knows and honestly i started driving them when my feet could touch the petals. It's not hard at all you just need practice like everything else, but if you cant hands on practice, look stuff up on the internet. Idk how it is where you live, (considering idk where you live) lol but there is a CDL school down here where you can go and they teach everything to know inside and out of the truck and do proper test before even letting you drive the truck and then they put you in 2008-2010 T200 pulling a 53' Dryvan and let you drag it around a couple corners and down a few streets, and eventually the Highway. Its kind of funny though because im 17 and im getting my permit now (started late due to family issues) and im applying for my intrastate CDL next year to run for my dads company.
IDK if this helped you but i just thought some of the information you could use.

I'm sorry, but that seems like quite the tall tale; he's never took or taken a test for his cdl and driving since he was 9?

yes my dad was born in the 50's the first truck he drove was a cabover international pulling a grain trailer he only drove so many miles from the fields to the grainaries but when he turned 17 the white man took him to the dps then and told them he needed a license i don't know where your from but in the 50's in Arkansas everything was based off of race. My dad had to drink at separate water fountains and my dad is mixed with white and black his dad ran out when he got my grandmother pregnant because she was black. my dads step dad was the one who taught him everything about trucks, he was the one who worked for the white man that started my dad. My dad lost his haz mat endorsement because he didn't renew it on time, but he never took the test so he didn't bother to go take it again.
Why would i lie about something like that? i have better things in life to do than lie to a bunch of people i don't even know?

That's quite a story, you should publish it... You know there are laws about that even in the 50s and if he did drive at age 9, no dot or cops saw him which means it wasn't on busy roads. Also, if he is 54, then he was born in 59 which would have made him 9 in 68. The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department was created in 1913 and the DOT was created in 1966 and began operation in 1967. So the DOT had been in operation for about a year when he 'started driving.' It's just kindof a ridiculous story. Granted, I drove a truck when I was 11 but I did't drive constantly at 11. I'm not sure if you meant he drove every now and then on back roads while riding with his stepdad, but that's the only way that makes sense...

So if you dont believe it that's fine more power too you. Have a great day. c:

i've drove sense i could reach the pedals 9-10 i drove a 53'ft container with my dad when i was 11 from Texas to about Shreveport, Louisiana and then last year i hauled a load of frozen meat from texas to southern California all the way shot right past most the scales cause we had the new scale reader deal on the truck we drove. My dad only took over two or three times when we did have to stop at the scales. and of course entering California where they had to check the goods.

But just for clarification what exactly is wrong with a grown ass man playing a computer game. Did I miss something? I got a full time job, I make damn good money, I take care of my family. So whats wrong with me playing a game in my free time. I guess thats just your teenage way of thinking. Dont worry you will understand someday when you grow up.

I'm pretty sure the majority of gamers are over 21. In fact, the average gamer is 37... So that makes you a minority along with all the other kids here... not excluding me, I'm still a kid. You are one of those people that believes what they want. If you say something, you believe it and will stand by it till you die. If you don't believe it to start with you'll probably never believe it. This little tale has proven that. Now, learn how to spell since, learn how to type out and, and grow up a little. For someone who's as professional as you, seeing as you work 2 jobs, have driven since you could reach the petals and are going to college next year(ON an automotive degree or FOR an automotive degree?), you don't seem to be very mature. You should drop the attitude and get on with your workaholic illegitimate life. Noobs these days...

Sitting on your daddy's lap while he drives doesn't count, kiddo.
I admit I've illegally driven trucks on the road before, but in necessary situations (besides, most of the time I'd only move a trailer around the corner to park it up) and the road I drive down is pretty much a quiet dead end road so I wouldn't go to the lengths of saying I'm driving down a motorway chillin' like Sir Ghost Trucker here.

Thread serious mode: Disabled5'6 is short and you would still be passed as a kid, probably a 14 year old. Unless you have one shortass father, then you ain't tall at all. [image]dumb ass, you said sitting in my dads lap when i was 11 i was that tall, my father is 6'5 and as of today im 6,3.
