Any of you Canadian's know much about the VHF Amateur Ham radios and modifying them for out-of-band use? I'm assuming not since Northern Canada and Alaska are the only places that truckers really use them.

I don't know much about them since I only learned about there existence back in January. I do know that the CB is rarely used around here now adays. It's pretty much all the VHF Radio stuff. I know I'm not much of help but eh, just thought I'd put that out there, lol.

When I first found that CBs were not used in the north, it was a shock to my system, but now I see why. I can't answer your question, but I think it's great that you guys use a radio that actually has a range of more than about 10 miles. That wouldn't be too useful on the Alaska highway.

Yeah, I don't know why the 48 states don't use them. CB's are old, outdated, stereotyped technology. So much more features and range with a VHF/UHF radios. It's easy to create your own private channels, and program in already used channels. With mine I can tune in and listen to troopers, Airport, all sorts of different channels. I can even communicate with walkie talkies, and marine radios if they are in range.

We use them all the time at work. I don't know much more than the basics though. We can't modify them though because it's regulated pretty heavily on the marine side. I know if you fuck around on 16 the fire department comes to your house. I'm actually going to buy a portable one on my time off. The run pretty low wattage though so the range isn't amazing, but it's for work anyway.
