I feel like adding my 2 cents to this subject ;D Luke - "Mechanics as a fallback job" Chris - "Being a mechanic can be worst than being a fucking doctor, because day after day new shit is being designed and you have to go almost every month to learn new shit". I'm not sure what a "can do better" career is (I know you don't mean anything bad by the way you worded it ), sure it depends on what you wanna do. So far I've been a truckmechanic for more than 21 years (including 3 years as an aprentice), the past 17 years at a private Volvo dealer/workshop and I still can't think of anything I'd rather do. Using it as a "fallback" aint really an option, todays trucks/cars have so much advanced technologhy that you need to keep yourself at a very high level of knowledge to be able to take care of problems with newer trucks/cars. Today I've been at a semnar about what my job as a key technician requires in the future, during the next 2 month I have to take 25 tests, each one having 20 questions/statements and I need to have a score in each one of them at no less than 80% to pass. What I'm trying to say is, being a mechanic aint just back breaking or hard work, IMO it's just as fun and challenging as working with computers and stuff. Kurt - If you really wanna be a mechanic then go for it! If you want to you can get a really good, funny and challenging career, but it mostly depends on you and your personal goals. My personal goal is to be one of the best truckmechanics at any european Volvo dealer and so far I think I'm doing good (thats my oppinion ;D ), I mean along with doing normal repairs and diagnosing I get to work with parts that aint even released on trucks yet (parts being put on trucks for 12 - 18 month for secret road testing to avoid releasing new parts that fails). I don't know if any of this makes sence to you guys but it does to me ;D

Kurt is grown, he probably knows half the shits we're saying ;D
Being a mechanic can suck, but the money is good if you know how to work the system. Well worth it. I was going to school for automotive but it gave me headaches because of all the damn paperwork and it was very little hands on. Let alone I wasn't really "happy" doing it. Working on cars extensively isn't really my thing. Thats why I love welding. Little to no paperwork other than your requests for materials on the job site, and thats on the computer. Give me a print and some metal and I'll make that bitch stronger than ever.
I say if you can't wait to start working on a car, than its the job for you. Thats with anything in my opinion. If you leave feeling like a million dollars knowing you just put this or that together and it works, and your happy doing it its awesome. No feeling like it. I can't imagine me doing anything else to be honest.
I defiantly agree with Mike. You think its peachy and it'll go this way, you'll have x amount of dollars by Y and you'll have your business by this date, don't count on it. Get a steady job first, then you'll realize. Taxes are a bitch ;D

Well I'm not old, lol. I honestly don't even know what I'm doing. Right now I'm working for my uncle's plumbing business, learning that shit and I'm in school for criminal justice. After I finish the criminal J shit I'm thinking of either going into being an electrician or plumbing, or maybe taking some time off and getting a gig as a security guard with the criminal justice degree. Who fuckin knows lol.
And Bora yeah I feel like what Row said, I don't know if I'd be able to do it as a career. But as a hobby I really love it.

Fuck you Swedish greasers. Here I am searching for some nice GM's and Fords, and all I find are matte-black, well smoked, tons of beer spilled inside, dented up and rusted up full-sizes. Yeah, I'm so moving to the states in a somewhat near future.

They're not greasers! Real greasers respect cars. That's why I call them Swedish greasers. Here are a few examples of "matte-black, well smoked, tons of beer spilled inside, dented up and rusted up full-sizes" that are for sale. Although not every single one is a full-size, but still. www.blocket.se/gallivare/Oldsmobile_delta_88_32053090.htm?ca=11&w=3www.blocket.se/dalarna/Oldsmobile_Delta_88_Diesel_30890280.htm?ca=11&w=3www.blocket.se/uppsala/Cadillac_Series_62_Cab_32074500.htm?ca=11&w=3www.blocket.se/gavleborg/Pontiac_Le_Mans__79_30528395.htm?ca=11&w=3www.blocket.se/vi/31907155.htm?ca=11www.classiccars.se/classic/b_detalj.asp?txtLopnr=42056&txtVar=1www.classiccars.se/classic/b_detalj.asp?txtLopnr=40902&txtVar=1Don't tell me that it's character, because it is not. These guys take out the ol' paint roller, dip it in flat-black and paint the damn thing. Then drive it up and down the streets of our cities while listening to some shite-recreation of 50's rockabilly sung by guys born 20 years ago who can't capture what once was, scream at 14-16 year old girls while drinking their heads of with their own homemade alcohol, jump on the trunk and kick in the doors. We do have real greasers in Sweden. I went to the ratrod reunion this summer where all of the real greasers unite, and man that may have been the best meet of the summer. The atmosphere is fantastic, everyone's laid back and polite. I am by no means a greaser, but I'll def go back to the ratrod reunion.

What water do you guys get over there, hard or soft?
England has hard water, it's disgusting and makes me light headed. Have to filter it, precisely why I avoid drinking it on the odd occasion I'm there. ;D

My water's hard... I live outside of town so my subdivision doesn't have or want city water... if so we will be annexed inviting sidewalks, streetlights, higher energy bills or whatever else the city elects to do so we voted against it. My subdivision has it's own water treatment facility for household use but I purchased a reverse osmosis water system soon after my home was built. I pump from my well that keeps my grass watered year round. The water from my subdivision has too much chlorine/bleach or whatever it's treated with in it. Hard water sucks... it taste like shit, smells like shit, ruins your clothes... car... home exterior... you name it. Not to mention it can be hazardous to your health depending on where you live. Some people develop cancer related illnesses, some even kidney or liver failure... even death and... with all the chemicals, pesticides, parasites and lies floating around regulations today... you have to be careful or your doomed

Ours (Philadelphia) is pretty hard, but nothing too major. Ours doesn't smell or anything like that. I know down south where I go on vacation in Fayetteville, NC and Tar Heel, its hard. Smells like shit.

I live in the countryside and we have soft water (well all of Wales is rural really), it's something to do with the mountains and rock we have which filters the water. It's funny when you see commercials on TV advertising stuff like washing machine and dishwasher tablets that get rid of limescale because it builds up and can damage it, I just laugh because we don't need any ;D ;D ;D
