Ask all your computer/operating system questions here, as well as discuss the latest in computer technology!
my first question is, will i be able to hook up my ddr2sdram to a typical ddr2 slot?
it's pissing me off because i got an amd athlon x2 64 cpu rated at 2.8GHz like 6 months ago and it's just been sitting because my mobo isn't compatible with a dual core setup. i've been scanning for a new mobo and i cant find one that supports my cpu and ram. it's pretty much daggering my ass cause i guess i'm gonna end up buy either a new cpu and mobo combo or a ram mobo combo.

why not just make a stickied thread. i've got a question. my first question is, will i be able to hook up my ddr2sdram to a typical ddr2 slot? it's pissing me off because i got an amd athlon x2 64 cpu rated at 2.8GHz like 6 months ago and it's just been sitting because my mobo isn't compatible with a dual core setup. i've been scanning for a new mobo and i cant find one that supports my cpu and ram. it's pretty much daggering my ass cause i guess i'm gonna end up buy either a new cpu and mobo combo or a ram mobo combo. depends.. there are diffrent speeds of ddr 2 (ie 800,1600) and if your mobo does not support that speed then your outta luck. RE: CPU's, check your motherboards manual; to see if it supports the Athlon series, if not, again your hosed. Does not have to support x2, but if it supports x2, your computer will be better optimized for dual cores.

K heres the rule when your building a computer.
Buy all the stuff at the same time, and change everything out. You gotta get a new mobo, new processor, new ram and new videocard all at the same time. Trying to piece together computers by using old parts and putting in newer ones and shit wont do you much good. The speed wont improve by much, and itll still be outdated. I know theres a money issue here aswell, Im not dumb. But that's the ideal way.
You can keep your hard drive, with your OS on it, and you might (but probably not) be able to keep your power supply. You can definitely keep your CD & DVD drives, and if you have a case then most likely you can keep that too. But what I found is, buy it all at once and put it all together at once-> mobo, processor, video, ram.
Highly recommended that you get a powerful power supply too.. dont disregard your PS because a weak one might give you all sorts of lame problems.

Alright, maybe you guys can help me I've been working on this problem for a few days. A couple days ago I let my mom use my computer, I put her on the Guest account, so she did her usual facebooking. So I got it back, logged off the Guest account. Logged onto mine, and my desktop looked like it just game out of the box...so I'm like wtf. I ignored it. Put it back to the way I liked it, so I wanted to listen to some music, well guess what. All 40 gigs of my music was gone. All the folders, everything was still organized. But all the music files were gone. So I run a virus scan with avg. Nothing, so I question it. I use spybot search and destroy, it freezes halfway. So I try ctrl-alt-delete. Nothing happened. So I held down the power button and restarted the computer, restored it to a week back. Everything was fine, but all my music was still gone. So I'm really like WTF. So I go onto the internet do my usual browsing, read a few forums. Post, work on glt a bit. Get on xfire, talk. Computer freezes. Still no Ctrl-Alt-Delete. So i hold down the power button..restart it, the computers fine for the rest of the night. I fire it up the next day, and I go to play haulin, wont work. So I read the log nothing wrong, so just for the hell of it. I took all my mods out, and it still wouldn't work. And it kept on freezing and freezing and freezing..so finally I said fuck it, and called Toshiba. After a half hour with them, they had me restore my computer to "Out of Box State" So everything succesful, I install firefox, and xfire. After I restored it, it froze about 10 minutes of me browsing. So Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Nothing. So I hold down the power button and restart it. So I go back on firefox browse the web, talking to a few friends on xfire. It freezes, so I re-do the whole process again. So I finally said fuck it I'm going to bed, well I got on it today, Still doing it. I installed avg, ran a scan on the whole computer. Nothings wrong. So I restored it back to two days ago. It seems to be working now...but I had to restart it once again. So, right now I'm crossing my fingers hoping it doesn't freeze so I can finish this. Can you help me out? I'm so lost. Virus scans are telling me everythings okay. And the computers not working. Help a brother out! edit: forgot to mention, i gotta restart the computer to open a program. lol.

It's not even a year old! It has 2 gigs of ram. It runs fast as can be. I just did the factory restore again...so lets see how it goes. But I've never had a computer do this to me...and all the computers I've fixed. I've never seen this. Any ideas? Thanks for the reply latif

Dylan, you don't gotta buy all new shit if you want to upgrade. My mobo is a pci-e 1.0 capable and my 2.0 card fit just fine and doesn't affect performance. If it's not broken don't fix it. Unless, you need/want to. As for processors, it's gotta be compatible with your mobo and you might be fucked for that upgrade if your video card doesn't fit the slot and you got the wrong type of RAM. That's what ususally goes wrong when upgrading usually, you gotta make sure everything will work together. Oh, don't keep your OS on your hard drive either, that will cause all sorts of conflicts and leave your computer feeling confused. If you do a major upgrade like a motherboard, always do a clean install of windows. Just throw all your shit on your hard drive and throw in a boot disk.

@tim - Vista. You shouldn't have done anything right from the start except restart it a few times, then it'll be alright for a while. I had the same thing quite often. Restart and it'll work for a bit then crash. Restart it again then when it's back on it'll say all your anti virus and security stuff is off and it won't go back on. Then restart again and it'll be fine until the next time lol. I think that's right from when I had it.

Alright. Basically today, I was on my computer as usual, not doing any "major" processes (zmod, 3d max, etc) just browsing the web, when my computer just froze. The video's audio I was watching started stuttering. So I turn the computer off and turned it back on. The computer comes on, but the screen stays black. I smelled smoke so I opened it up. I THINK its the PSU, but not positive. Anybody got any clues? My computer is right infront of the heater vent, so Im thinking that might have made the PSU hot as fuck. But im not sure...

Ouch probably the heater vent is hot as fuck and the cpu is even hotter. If i was you'd i'd open it up and take off the cpu fan check my ram and video card.

Luis I'll try that.
Latif, it still turns on so I dont THINK its the CPU. If anybody has a momo, when you turn your computer on, the wheel goes crazy, thats how I still know it "turns" on. But I cant see shit on the screen. I might have to put the old PSU in and try that. If it still doesn't work i'll take the graphics card out and try that. Fuck......

Try cleaning your computer with canned air, and for god sakes keep it away from heaters.
