Since I didn't really see a CB thread when I searched I thought I would start one. I'm thinking of buying a new one and figured I would get some suggestions from some of you fellow real life truckers. I have been looking into the Galaxy DX 959 or maybe a Cobra 29 LX. My dad has a Cobra 29 LX that's a few years old that he is gonna give me. It has been tuned just a little for better gain but nothing major. He said it gets out about 20 miles or so which is more than enough for me. If you guys have any opinions or suggestions offer them up. Hell post pictures if you want to show off your set up. Edit: In the event that any of you are looking online for a reputable cb radio shop / dealer I have found a site that posts reviews for different online shops. I have included a link so feel free to have a look. www.bestcbradioshop.com/

Should be able to reach out there quite a ways on ssb. Not to sure about putting that bitch on my dodge van though lol. Might be alright with a tennis ball and a sturdy mount.

I still can't believe he got rid of that truck...
Don't get a 959. If you go with a Galaxy, get either a 99V2 or what I'm going to get, a 98. 98 is 200 watts out of the box. I'm putting it in my Pete with the big custom built coil antennas built by the local CB shop, and going to have them pair it with the biggest linear they can get it set with.
Right now I have a: Cobra 29 Classic Night Watch Cobra 148 GTL Galaxy 33 Galaxy 88
When I get my KW paid for I'm going to have my big radio for my Pete built.

I just wasn't sure if I would need a 200 watt radio and after all the shit I read on truckers report about radio active and their claims I was a little leary of businesses saying their radios would push 200 +/- watts out of the box. If it's legit and a reputable business though then I'm all for it. Hell I could walk all over some of the folks around here. Not that I would do that because it Pisces me off when it happens to me but you get the point I'm trying to make. Thanks for the advice. I will look into it further.

Yeah I think I'm gonna get that cobra from dad. I'm still gonna do some more searching though. That Galaxy that was mentioned above sounds like a bad ass radio as long as it dont need to be reprogrammed. Some of the do from what I hear.

I've always been biased to cobra, but dad has had a cobra since I can remember so that's probably why. I know galaxy and connex make good radios too. Too bad it's hard to find good radio shops..

A buddy of mine gave me a Cobra 29 LTD a while back, peaked, tuned, all that good stuff. Put a Francis antenna with it and was talking to a guy 30-35 miles up the road. I'd rather have a Cobra over any other radio any day.

What's everyone's thoughts on Ranger radios?

My cousin Jim runs nothing but ranger and stryker radios. He swears by them but I've never had one. I've always run uniden and motorola. I want to get in to better quality and more powerful radios.

Connex and galaxy seem to be the best for quality, but the longest lasting and most durable radios are cobra. When peaked and tuned they're as good as just about any other radio, but they are tough as hell. Dad's had several, and all he's had still work today. He bought the CB he gave to me(29ltd) in the early 90s. The damn radio is older than me! lol

I finally got that 29 ltd classic from dad and the friggin thing is busted. The damn swr and nb/anl switches are both seized up and the volume doesn't work. I adjusted the squelch and rf gain up and down several times both ways and nothing. It comes on but it won't do anything else. I think I'm just gonna buy a new one. I will use my little 19 Ultra III for now I guess. It's cheap but at least it works.

spray the knob mechanisms with electrical cleaner and also spray the NB/ANL switch with cleaner, it should free it up

Most of the time the only thing wrong with the knob mechanisms and the switches are dust and grime buildup and spraying the cleaner on them and just working the cleaner into the mechanisms and switches should free them all up. And if that 29LTD Classic is an old side mounted microphone then it's worth it to clean those up or take it to a technician and have it fixed as those radios are pretty rare these days.

I haven't heard anyone on a cb in years. I still wanna get one though for some reason. They're still widely used down here. Especially for talking SSB on channel 38 LSB. I've talked all over the US & most of Canada and down into Central and South America on my Galaxy 99 up on the lower side of channel 38
